George Oates (b. 1993 Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand) lives and works in Berlin since 2017.
Artist Statement
I make paintings, works on paper and films that explore layers in both my working process and the meanings created from it.
As a child I learnt to communicate through inference, euphemism, body language and shame. Communication was never direct or clear. The ways we express ourselves, interact with each other, share and hide our true selves is at the core of my work.
Words, textures and lines appear, disappear, are obscured or revealed; as I create these visual layers different levels of meaning spring up alongside them. The process of using a specific medium becomes part of the piece itself, as does my role as artist and creator.
